Akron's Sewers-for-Scholarships idea getting web attention

A national website that provides info on what local governments are doing is spotlighting Akron's sewers-for-scholarships idea. Click HERE to read the article.

If you've been following the story, there's not much that's new in the article. Still, it's worth a click because there's a sidebar article all about the "Kalamazoo Promise" plan, which Mayor Plusquellic mentioned was a motivating factor behind his drive to provide free college to local high school grads.

It's been almost three months since the Mayor made the announcement. He mentioned that the next step was forming two committees -- one to examine the sewer sale/lease options and make a proposal .. and a second group to examine the education angle to include recommendations on to implement the program.

Stay tuned ...

I still think this is just crazy enough to work. I don't hear any otehr ideas about how to keep kids in the schools and in town.

I'm curious to see how this will work. Will it only include kids that go to APS for k-12? What about folks who pay taxes yet send their kids to private schools or homeschool them?

How about a third committee to see how much it will cost to redesign the combined sewer system so that human waste no longer runs off into the Cuyahoga every time there is a major rain storm? And then a fourth committee to figure out who is going to pay for the sewer fix up?

Oh, the puns that come to mind on this one are very fun and very inappropriate.

My children go to private schools but they will not be included in this venture. I pay school taxes like everyone else. We just choose private schools for the religion.
I hate to think Im paying for everyone else but private school children have to be neglected. The taxes are not a choice.
