Breaking News: Akron School Board member proposes tabling uniform vote

With just a few hours until tonight's Akron School Board meeting in which the board may pass a sweeping policy to institute mandatory uniforms in all elementary and middle schools, one board member tells me that he will ask his colleagues to hold off on the vote -- for now.

James Hardy tells me that that he's been taking a hard look at the proposal over the last five days, to include hearing objections and support by parents and others about making Miller South an exception, and feels that the board should do further research and hold further discussion before passing the policy.

Hardy outlined his points in a one-page statement, which he shared with me and which he intends to read tonight before asking that the issue be table. I'll let you hear the context from him, but in short, Hardy is making the plea that the board consider other possibilities -- beyond just a yes/no exception for MS -- for the impact of a new uniform policy. With a group of parents planning to demonstrate before tonight's meeting, Hardy's brave proposal will get a lot of attention.

As one of the youngest board members in the district's history, Hardy is taking a bold stand considering that two new members are due to join the board in January, which could certainly impact the future of a uniform policy.

Stay tuned.

I think they should also have uniforms in high school. I work at East High in Akron and the dress code is not inforced there. The children certainly aren't dressed appropriately.

Is Mr Hardy's stand really bold? If you look at the members who wanted to table, and take the comments in print media by the two members to come on board in January, all four are freshman members of the board. What do the veterans see that the freshmen don't? Could it be that the freshmen aren't seasoned enough to take a stand on this issue and the veterans have learned that at some point you have to make your position known, make a decision, and move on. Tableing the matter is a way to apease all on the issue, without making anyone mad. This is an issue that had been discussed by this school board for more that a year, and it was time to act.
