BREAKING NEWS: David Giffels leaving ABJ

Sources confirm that veteran Beacon Journalist columnist David Giffels tells his newsroom that he's taking a buyout and will begin a teaching career at the University of Akron and continue as a freelance writer.

Still waiting to talk to David .. but I'm told he's happy about the decision.

More to come.

However, now there is NO reason to continue my subscription to the Beacon.

This makes me sad! He's one of their best writers. Can you find out what he will be teaching at Akron U?

Let me be one of the first to welcome David to The University of Akron.

Does this mean no more NewsNight Akron for David?

The Beacon is going down the tubes. It is to the point were I would not read it even if it was being printed in my back yard!

Eric,

Here is an even BETTER one for you!!! One of the Beacon's editorial writers asked a MUCH-MALIGNED local political party leader (that has been criticized by this writer) if he could put in a good word at the University of Akron for a job!!!

I stand by my prediction ... no print edition of the ABJ will exist in 2 more years.

It will be an insert to the PD ... or exist online only.

While being so very happy for David and cheering for his future, I am devastated that we will not be privy to his insights in the ABJ. Thank goodness I just re-subscribed to the NY Times. Between that, your blog and the West Side Leader, I'll have a better chance of keeping up with what is going on in Akron. Just need to check Ohio.com for the obits and find a way to make sure I get my comic fix daily.

Oh, JSK, why did you have to go?

David told us today he wouldn't discuss over the air but is booked for Monday morning's show with Ray Horner; I figure there will be a column Sunday.

I am sure this wasn't easy for david and he will share when he is ready. other well known writers are also leaving in this round of buyouts so I fear the paper's future. will also miss windhorst and mcmanahmon from sports. and have always missed pluto.

I'd imagine he's teaching journalism at UA. Kudos to Akron U for getting a great, knowledgeable person on their staff, and shame on the ABJ for going into the toilet, slowly over the years.

excellent publish, very informative. I wonder why the opposite experts of
this sector don't notice this. You should proceed your writing.
I am sure, you've a huge readers' base already!
