Anatomy of Breaking News 3 - Covering two major stories at once

3:36 p.m. Vic Gideon has his daily news story on the UAW strike in Twinsburg. On any other day, this would be our lead story, but not tonight. Even with hundreds of local auto workers now on the picket lines, I doubt his story will see the light of day in the early Cleveland newscasts, but we'll look to include it in the Akron news broadcast at 6:30 p.m.

3:41 p.m. Our newsroom staff has dug up info on the shooter's juvenile record, which includes his release from home detention in June. Prior to that, he'd been involved with the Department of Youth Services for several months.

3:46 p.m. Dimhoff is here .. we're putting him on the Akron set right now to go live. Also, Tim White is getting on our set in Cleveland too to talk with him.

3:50 p.m. A press conference is now set for 4 p.m. We'll be carrying it live. Photographer Tim Coffey just called to tell me that the press conference will be held in studio B at TV#. Studio A is where the news is broadcast .. and studio B is where the additional shows (Tribe Talk, Good Company, etc.) are put together. It will be odd to have the news crews from our competitors in our own building.

3:56 p.m. Dimhoff is doing great .. he's adding analysis .. and allowing our crews to regroup and get ready for the evening news broadcasts and the live press conference.

4:04 p.m. I'm setting up an unrelated story on a local man who used a home video camera to catch bad guys in the act while robbing homes in his neighborhood. He got some great shots earlier this week of his neighbors house being hit. We'll get an interview with him and see his video .. but it may be tomorrow before we can find room to air the story because of the school shooting and the derailment.
4:08 p.m. Press conference is finally ready to start ... again, just wild to see other news crews in our building. Glad we're able to help with the process.
4:18 p.m. I got an interview with Dimhoff on tape that we can use in future stories tonight. Our news bosses say we will have an Akron-Canton Newscast at 6:30 p.m. and that TV3 will break away to NBC Nightly News as scheduled.
4:21 p.m. Chief McGrath just shared that there are video cameras at the school and that he believes the shooter was caught on tape. Now the frenzy will begin to see those tapes. Press conference over .. gotta get ready for the evening news broadcasts now.
More later .. Eric
